Peugeot 607 Engine Smoke and Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Peugeot 607 is experiencing engine smoke and power loss, with the check engine light illuminated. The smoke is bluish and smells oily, suggesting oil is being burned. A likely cause is a defective PCV valve, which can lead to increased crankcase pressure and oil leakage. It is recommended to have a professional address the issue to prevent further damage, and the problem was resolved with a repair costing 360€.

The smoke is kinda bluish, yeah, and it does smell a bit oily now that you mention it. Louder... maybe a bit? What exactly does the PCV valve do, and is it something I can fix myself, or is it best left to a professional?

The PCV valve is part of the emissions system; it regulates pressure in the crankcase and vents excess gases back into the intake manifold. If it fails, the crankcase pressure builds up, forcing oil past the seals, hence the smoke and reduced power. While you could try to replace it yourself, given the symptoms and potential for further damage, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. A broken PCV can cause costly damage to other components if left unchecked.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I was hoping it would be something simple, but I guess I'll bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. The repair cost came to 360€, it was indeed the crankcase ventilation. At least it's sorted now!

Sounds like it could be a crankcase ventilation issue. Is the smoke bluish, and does it smell a bit oily? If so, that points to oil getting burned. A defective PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can cause a leak and all sorts of problems, including those symptoms. Does the engine sound louder than usual, too?
