Peugeot 607 Ignition Problems

I'm having terrifying issues with what I suspect is the ignition system on my 2007 Peugeot 607 diesel. It has 231902 km on the clock. Sometimes the engine refuses to start. Other times, it starts fine, but then cuts out unexpectedly while I'm driving. And when it does run, it often runs very rough. I've checked the battery and fuel levels. I even had a look at the fuses. Could a defective fuse cause these kinds of intermittent problems?

Those symptoms do sound rather concerning, especially the engine cutting out while driving. It certainly could be a fuse, as a failing fuse can sometimes cause intermittent issues before finally blowing completely. However, given the range of problems you're experiencing (no start, cutting out, rough running), it's more likely to be something a bit more complex than just a simple fuse. Have you noticed any other electrical issues, like flickering lights or strange behavior from the dashboard? It is possible that the ignition switch itself is faulty. Those switches can get worn over time and cause all sorts of odd problems. Also, did you check the ignition coil?

I have not noticed any flickering lights or strange dashboard behavior. I did not check the ignition coil, to be honest I do not know how to do it. Where can I find the ignition switch to check if this is faulty? Is it difficult to replace it?

Okay, no flickering lights or dash issues is good, it rules out some things. Regarding the ignition switch, it's usually located on the steering column, where you insert the key. Replacing it can be a bit tricky, as it often involves removing some trim panels and disconnecting electrical connectors. While it's not rocket science, you'll need some basic tools and a bit of mechanical aptitude. Given the potential complexity and the safety implications (especially with the engine cutting out while driving), my strongest recommendation would be to take your Peugeot to a trusted mechanic or auto electrician. They'll be able to properly diagnose the issue and replace the ignition switch (or whatever else is causing the problem) safely and correctly. I know it might cost more than doing it yourself, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

I think you're right; I'm probably out of my depth trying to fix this myself. I took it to a local garage, and they confirmed it was indeed a faulty fuse that was causing all the problems. They replaced it, and the car now runs like a dream. The repair cost me 52€, which I was very happy with.
