Peugeot 607 immobilizer issue

I'm experiencing an immobilizer problem with my 2001 Peugeot 607 (gasoline engine). The car has 57445 km on it. The engine doesn't start, or starts briefly and then stops. An error is stored. Could the key programming be the issue?

Hello! I had something similar happen with my old Opel Astra, though yours sounds trickier. Mine would crank but not fire. Have you tried the spare key? Also, does your key fob still lock and unlock the doors remotely? Just trying to eliminate possibilities.

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, I have tried the spare key, and it presents the same symptoms. The remote locking and unlocking are working fine. Does this align with the issue you had with your Astra?

Ah, okay. Since both keys are doing the same thing and the remote is working, it probably isn't the key battery. With my Astra, the remote stopped working, and that was the clue. Given your symptoms, I'd say it's beyond simple fixes. Best bet is to take it to someone with the right diagnostic tools. Like a doctor needing an X-ray, they can read the car's 'mind'.

Thank you for your input. I took your advice and had the key reprogrammed. It turned out the programming was indeed incorrect. The total cost was 45€. Everything is working as it should now.
