Summary of the thread
A 2008 Peugeot 607 diesel was experiencing issues suspected to be related to transfer case limp mode, with symptoms of gearbox slipping and unclean shifting. Haven't scanned for codes yet, planning to borrow a reader this weekend. Anything specific I should look for in the fault codes, or any particular module I should focus on?

Focus on any codes related to wheel speed sensors, ABS module malfunctions, or communication errors between the ABS module and the transmission control module. If confirmed, take the car to a qualified workshop for further diagnostic assessment. Ignoring the issue will lead to serious mechanical damage.

Got the codes read, and it pointed to an ABS sensor issue. A wire had come loose, so I reconnected it, cleared the codes, and the car is running perfectly again! Repair cost: 0€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Symptoms are consistent with transfer case limp mode. Diagnostic trouble codes related to the ABS system can trigger this. Retrieve the fault codes from all relevant control modules (engine, transmission, ABS) to get a clearer understanding. Have you scanned the car for any codes yet?
