Peugeot 806 belt tensioner issue

Hi, I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2001 Peugeot 806 (gasoline engine) with 259257 km on the clock. The belt-handover no longer works. I suspect a defective belt bringer/handover itself. Has anyone experienced something similar? What could be the issue? I assume it may affect the timing belt. A mechanic mentioned something about a bad belt tensioner perhaps? Any advice would be appreciated before I start tearing things apart.

Hey, I had something similar happen on my 806. Is it making a weird noise, almost like a squeal? It could be the belt tensioner, like your mechanic said. Those can go bad over time, especially with that many kilometers. A worn belt tensioner can cause all sorts of issues with the serpentine belt, which drives things like the alternator and power steering pump. Made my car sound like a dying cat!

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, there is a noticeable squeal, and now it also sounds like the engine noise gets louder. Did you replace the tensioner yourself, or did you bring it to a shop? Do you think the timing belt is also a risk?

I ended up taking it to a workshop. Replacing the tensioner itself isn't too hard, but I wasn't sure about the timing belt situation. Considering the noise and mileage, getting a professional opinion is probably best. They can also check the other pulleys and belts while they're in there, like the crankshaft pulley. It's worth the peace of mind, believe me!

Alright, thanks for the advice. I brought it to the workshop and they confirmed it was indeed the belt tensioner. Repair cost was 455€. I'll keep an eye on the timing belt, and thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
