Peugeot 806 reduced power and exhaust smell

I'm having a real headache with my 2001 Peugeot 806 diesel. A warning light keeps popping up, and the engine power feels seriously reduced. It's also started smoking quite a bit when I accelerate, and there's a really strong exhaust smell. Could it be something serious? It has 226458 km. I have read online it could be linked with the diesel particulate filter, maybe exhaust pressure too low? What do you think?

I had a similar issue with my 806, although I can’t remember the exact pressure reading. Is the exhaust smell particularly strong? And when was the last time you had the DPF regenerated, or checked the exhaust back pressure sensor?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, the exhaust smell is really strong, almost acrid. About the DPF, I have never touched it. I don't even know how to check the exhaust back pressure sensor. Is it something I can do myself, or do I need special equipment?

Okay, the strong smell points towards an exhaust system issue for sure. Given you've never touched the DPF and you're not familiar with the sensor, I'd really recommend taking it to a workshop. Could be a defective sensor, and they'll diagnose it properly and do a regeneration if needed.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a workshop, and it turned out to be the exhaust back pressure sensor indeed! It cost me 245€ to replace. Now the car runs perfectly. Really appreciate your advice!
