Peugeot 807 DPF Exhaust Pressure Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Peugeot 807 diesel exhibited issues such as a warning light, reduced engine power, smoke, and a strong exhaust smell, suspected to be due to low diesel particulate filter (DPF) exhaust pressure. The problem was likely linked to DPF regeneration issues, exacerbated by frequent short trips, and potentially a faulty exhaust back pressure sensor. The recommended solution was to have the sensor checked, which was confirmed to be defective and replaced, resolving the issues.

The DPF hasn't been serviced recently, and I mainly do shorter journeys within the city. Could you elaborate on the 'faulty sensor'? What type of sensor are you referring to, and where is it typically located within the exhaust system? Also, how would a faulty sensor trigger these symptoms?

Right, city driving's the DPF's worst enemy! By 'faulty sensor', I mean the exhaust back pressure sensor. It's usually located before or after the DPF, measuring the pressure. If it's defective, it sends incorrect data to the engine's computer (ECU), which then reduces power and messes with the fuel mixture, causing smoke and smells. Because you are experiencing a cluster of symptoms, I recommend taking it to a workshop and having it checked out.

Following your advice, I took the Peugeot to a trusted workshop, where they confirmed that the exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective. The sensor was replaced, resolving all the previously mentioned issues. The total cost of the repair amounted to 245€. Thanks again for your guidance!

Sounds like a pain. That exhaust pressure issue on the DPF is common. The smoke and smell definitely point that way. When was the last time you had the DPF serviced or checked? Do you mainly do short trips, or longer runs on the motorway? Short trips prevent the DPF from regenerating properly. It could also be a faulty sensor giving bad readings.
