Peugeot 807 Exhaust Treatment Malfunction

Hello, I own a 2002 Peugeot 807 with a gasoline engine. It's showing an exhaust treatment malfunction. The check engine light comes on, the engine runs rough, there's an exhaust leak, and a strong smell. The car has 55871 km. Could this be related to the lambda sensor?

Sounds plausible. A defective oxygen sensor can definitely cause those symptoms, much like a faulty thermostat can mess with your engine's temperature. When the lambda sensor goes bad, the ECU doesn't get the correct info for air/fuel mixture, leading to inefficient combustion and emissions problems. However, it could also be related to the catalytic converter or even the NOx sensors. Has the car been consuming more fuel lately? Any noticeable decrease in power?

Fuel consumption seems normal, but the engine definitely feels less responsive. If it's not the lambda sensor, is there a way to diagnose the exact cause?

While you could try some DIY diagnostics, like checking the sensor's wiring harness for damage, pinpointing the exact cause of exhaust issues can be tricky without specialized equipment. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack without a magnet. A workshop can perform a diagnostic check. Better safe than sorry – exhaust problems left unchecked can damage other components, like the catalytic converter.

Thanks for the insight. Took it to a workshop, and it was indeed the lambda sensor. Repair cost 375€. All good now.
