Peugeot 807 preheating lamp and smoke issue

I've got a head-scratcher with my 2006 Peugeot 807 diesel. Lately, the preheating lamp on the dash isn't switching off, and the check engine light is on. To top it off, I'm noticing some smoke when I accelerate, especially when the engine is cold. The car has 184647 km on the clock. I'm suspecting it might be related to the glow control unit. I've read that a defective cable or plug connection to the component can cause these symptoms. Has anyone else experienced anything similar, or have any ideas on where to start digging deeper?

Whoa, that sounds like a headache! I had a somewhat similar issue with my old beater (different brand though), and it turned out to be a faulty glow plug. But the smoke makes me think it's more than just that. Did you check the error code with an OBD reader? That might give you a better clue as to what's going on.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't had a chance to check the error code yet, but it's on my to-do list. If it does point to the glow control unit, is it something relatively straightforward to replace myself, or am I better off taking it to a workshop? I'm fairly comfortable with basic car maintenance, but I don't want to mess anything up.

Okay, so if the error code points to the glow control unit, it might be a simple fix, like you suspected with the cable or plug. But honestly, with the smoke issue too, I'd be leaning towards getting it checked by a pro. It could be something more serious, and you don't want to risk causing more damage. Plus, they can properly diagnose the root cause and make sure everything's running smoothly. Could save you money in the long run!

Alright, thanks for the advice. I think I will take it to a workshop and have them take a look. It turned out the glow control unit was indeed defective and the cable connection was corroded. They replaced the unit and cleaned up the connection for 95€. Runs like new now!
