Peugeot Bipper Engine Knocking

Fuel octane, huh? Ignition timing? Now that's something I haven't really looked into. I usually just fill up with regular unleaded. Could cheap fuel really be causing all this grief? And ignition timing... is that something I can check myself, or am I going to need to get my hands dirty (and probably mess things up even more)?

An inadequate fuel octane rating can precipitate knocking combustion, particularly in engines designed for higher octane levels. Similarly, deviations in ignition timing can induce pre-ignition or detonation, thereby generating knocking sounds. While some rudimentary checks can be performed independently, I would strongly advise consulting a qualified automotive technician. The intricate nature of modern engine management systems necessitates specialized diagnostic tools and expertise. It is probably safer to have a workshop resolve the issue. I ended up having to do just that.

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll book it in at the workshop then and see what they say. Turns out it was deposits in the combustion chamber, like I suspected! They gave it a good clean and the knocking is gone. Cost me 425€, but at least it's running smoothly again.

I understand your concern regarding the knocking combustion in your Peugeot Bipper. While I do not possess specific familiarity with the Bipper model, I encountered analogous symptoms in my previous vehicle, a 2018 Opel Astra. The symptoms included reduced engine power, jerking during acceleration, visible smoke, and stored error codes. Have you considered the potential influence of fuel octane rating on the combustion process? Have you investigated the ignition timing to ascertain its accuracy and synchronization?
