When you mention the control unit sending faulty signals, how was that diagnosed? Easy, or did it need special tools? Any other symptoms besides no cooling?

Diagnosis was a pain. The mechanic used a tool to watch the AC control unit's signals while it was running – or trying to. It threw errors and didn't talk to the compressor right. Fuel use went up a bit as the car tried to make up for it. Best to take it to a shop; they'll have the right stuff to find the problem.

Just an FYI: took the Peugeot Expert to a shop. It was a bad AC control unit, like you thought. Cost 980€ for the part and labor. Thanks for the help!

Sounds familiar. My old Volvo V70 (petrol) had the same problem: AC quit, error code. Have you checked the refrigerant level? My control unit was sending bad signals, freaking out the compressor. Worth a look.
