Platina fuel tank ventilation leak

Check engine light keeps popping on in my 2002 Nissan Platina with a gasoline engine, and the engine occasionally stalls when idling. I've scanned the codes, and it seems to point towards a fuel tank ventilation system leak. Could this be the purge valve, or is there something else I should check?

I had a similar problem with my Platina, although I can't remember exactly what year it was. From what you describe, it does sound like it could be related to the EVAP system, specifically the activated charcoal filter. Think of it like a sponge that's supposed to absorb fuel vapors. If it gets saturated or cracked, it can cause all sorts of airflow issues. Has your fuel efficiency taken a hit as well?

That's interesting! I hadn't considered the charcoal filter itself. My fuel efficiency has been a bit worse than usual, now that you mention it. Where is the filter located, and is it something I can check myself without special tools? Also, could a defective filter really cause the engine to stall like that?

Yes, a defective charcoal filter absolutely can cause stalling. If the filter isn't doing its job, the system can't properly regulate the air/fuel mixture, leading to system failure. As for location, it's usually near the fuel tank, but honestly, accessing it can be a pain, and you risk damaging other components. Given the symptoms and the mileage (214655 km), I'd strongly suggest taking it to a trusted workshop for a proper diagnosis. It's likely the filter, but they can confirm and ensure everything else is in order.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took your suggestion and brought it to my local mechanic. Turns out you were spot on! The activated charcoal filter was indeed the culprit. The total repair cost came to 275€. Runs like a charm now!
