Porsche 991 Trans Whine: Cooler Issues or Mechanic Time?

Hey everyone, my 2017 Porsche 991 (38.5k km) is giving me some trouble lately. The transmission's acting weird, rough shifts, strange grinding sounds, and there's this constant whining noise. I think it might be the transmission oil pressure cooler, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Any recommendations for reliable mechanics who really know their way around Porsche transmissions? I'd love to hear about your experiences and what it ended up costing. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2014 Porsche Cayman S last year. The symptoms were nearly identical, rough shifting, grinding noises, and that annoying whining sound. Turned out to be a faulty valve cable connection in the transmission control unit. Got it fixed at an authorized Porsche service center. The mechanic showed me that the cable had worn down over time, affecting the transmission's ability to shift properly. The repair involved replacing the valve body assembly and recalibrating the transmission control module. It was a serious issue that needed immediate attention to prevent further transmission damage. Definitely don't wait too long on this one, transmission issues can get worse pretty fast. Make sure whoever works on it uses genuine Porsche parts. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the valve cable connection, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'm actually planning to take it in next week. Would you mind sharing what the repair cost you? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. After getting my Cayman S fixed at Porsche North Atlanta, everything's been running like a dream! The transmission oil pressure cooler issue was completely sorted out, and I haven't had a single problem since. The total bill came to 170€ for fixing the valve cable connection, honestly, not as bad as I was expecting for a Porsche repair! The mechanic did a fantastic job explaining everything, and you can really feel the difference in how the car drives now. The shifts are butter-smooth, and that annoying whining noise is completely gone. I'm so glad I didn't wait around on this one. Definitely one of the better maintenance decisions I've made with the car. It's been about a year now, and the transmission's still working perfectly, no other issues have popped up at all. Hope this helps with your decision! Let me know how it goes when you get yours fixed.

Thanks for all the details! Just got back from the mechanic yesterday, and wow, what a difference! You were spot on about getting it fixed quickly. Turned out my issue was also related to the valve cable connection, just like your Cayman. I ended up paying around 200€, a bit more than what you paid, but totally worth it. The mechanic I found was actually fantastic, super thorough and walked me through everything. The grinding and whining are completely gone, and the shifts are smooth as silk now. It's such a relief to have this sorted out. Really appreciate everyone's input here, helped me avoid what could've been a much bigger (and more expensive) problem down the road. The car's running better than ever, and I'm back to enjoying those weekend drives without worrying about the transmission acting up. Thanks again for all the help! Sometimes it really pays off to ask around before diving into repairs.
