Porsche 996: Key Fob Dead or Deeper Issues?

Locking/Unlocking issue

Key fob issues

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey everyone, having trouble with my '06 Porsche 996 (63,500 km) and could use some advice. The key fob's acting up, car won't lock/unlock properly, and there's a warning light on the dash. I think it might just be a dead key fob battery, but after a sketchy experience with my last mechanic, I'd rather hear from others first. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, was it really just the key fob battery, or should I be looking at something more serious? Also, if you're in the area, any recommendations for a trustworthy Porsche mechanic would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had a similar issue with my '09 Porsche Cayman S last month. From what you're describing, it sounds exactly like what I experienced. The key fob battery was indeed dead, and I got the same warning light on the dash. When I took it to the garage, they checked the entire central locking system just to be sure, but it turned out to be just the battery in the key fob. The mechanic showed me that these symptoms are pretty typical when the key battery gets low. They replaced it, and everything went back to normal, the warning light disappeared, and the remote locking started working perfectly again. It's not a serious issue at all, just regular maintenance. The key fob battery usually lasts several years before needing replacement. You can actually replace it yourself, but if you're not comfortable with that, any Porsche dealer or qualified mechanic can do it quickly. Best of luck sorting it out!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know it was just the key fob battery. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? And has everything been working smoothly since then? Just wanna make sure I'm not missing anything before I go ahead and get it sorted.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting it fixed at my mechanic, everything's been working like a charm, no more issues at all with the locking system or warning lights. The whole thing cost me 37.50€ for the battery replacement and labor, which honestly felt pretty reasonable for a Porsche service. It's been three months now since getting it sorted, and my Cayman S is working perfectly, the key fob's responding every time, no warning lights, and the central locking system is back to being as reliable as ever. Looking back, it's kind of funny how something as simple as a dead key battery can make you worry about bigger issues! Trust me, once you get this fixed, you'll be good to go. These key fob batteries are built to last several years, so you probably won't have to deal with this again for quite a while. Let me know if you need anything else! Cheers!

Thanks so much for all the info! I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday based on your advice. You were spot on, it was just the key fob battery! My mechanic charged me 40€, pretty close to what you paid. Funny story actually, when I got to the shop, I was still a bit nervous after my last mechanic experience, but this guy was super professional. He even showed me the old battery and explained how these things typically last about 3-4 years. Had me in and out in 15 minutes flat! The best part? Everything's working perfectly now. No more warning lights, and the remote locking is responding like new. Such a relief it wasn't anything serious, I was imagining all sorts of expensive repairs! Really appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this. It's great to have sorted this without breaking the bank or getting ripped off. Thanks again!
