Porsche 997 AC Woes: Faulty Temp Sensor Suspected?

Hey everyone, my 2009 Porsche 997 has AC issues, blowing warm air and not cooling properly. I suspect the ambient temperature sensor might be acting up, sending wrong readings to the system. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really interested in hearing about successful fixes from your mechanics and what the actual problem turned out to be. Looking for real-world experiences before heading to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had some experience (low experience) with a similar AC issue on my 2011 Porsche Cayman. The symptoms were exactly the same, warm air and inconsistent cooling. Took it to my trusted workshop last summer, and it turned out to be a faulty connection in the ambient temp sensor wiring. The fix was pretty straightforward, they replaced the cable and connections, cost me around 95€. Car's been running perfectly cool since then! But hey, before jumping to conclusions, what's the mileage on your 997? And have you noticed any other electrical quirks? Knowing these details would help determine if you're facing the same issue I had.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 997 is at 47592 KM and just had its latest service done. Haven't noticed any other electrical issues, so that's good news I guess. Glad to hear your fix was relatively simple and not too expensive. The symptoms do sound pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. I might get it checked out at my local Porsche specialist then, hopefully it's just the wiring like in your case. Did your mechanic mention any other potential causes they ruled out during the diagnosis?

Hey again! Thanks for asking about other potential causes. Yeah, when my Cayman was in the shop, the mechanic actually did a pretty thorough check before concluding it was the wiring issue. They initially suspected the refrigerant level might be low (that's usually the go-to culprit), but it was fine in my case. They also checked the compressor operation and the blend door actuator. You know what's interesting, your mileage is actually pretty close to what mine was when I had the issue (I was around 51,000 KM). Since you've just had your service done, at least you can rule out some basic maintenance-related causes. One thing my mechanic mentioned that might be worth noting, sometimes these temperature sensor issues can be intermittent, which makes them tricky to diagnose. In my case, the AC would occasionally work fine in the morning but start acting up as the day got warmer. Did you notice any pattern like that with yours? By the way, since getting it fixed, I haven't had a single AC problem in the past year. If your symptoms are truly similar to what I experienced, you're probably looking at a relatively straightforward fix. Just make sure your mechanic properly tests the sensor connections before just replacing parts, that's what saved me from a potentially more expensive repair!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! Come to think of it, I have noticed that morning/afternoon pattern you mentioned, it definitely seems to work better during cooler parts of the day. That's really reassuring to hear it matches your experience so closely, both the symptoms and the mileage. I've just scheduled an appointment with my mechanic for next week. I'll make sure to mention everything you've shared, especially about checking the sensor connections thoroughly before replacing anything. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all the details about your Cayman's repair. Having this kind of real-world experience to reference makes me feel much more confident heading into the shop! I'll probably update the thread once I get it sorted, in case anyone else runs into similar issues with their 997. Thanks again for your help!
