Thanks for chiming in! Yeah, I hear a faint whirring noise from the front of the engine bay, and the overheating mostly happens during regular driving. I've been keeping an eye on the coolant, have to top it off more frequently lately. Last service was about 3 months ago at 144148 KM. Your experience with the cable issue is really helpful. I was worried it might be something more serious (and expensive!). Did you notice any coolant leaks before getting it fixed? I'm seeing small drops on my garage floor occasionally, which got me concerned.

Hey again! Yeah, now that you mention the coolant leaks, I definitely had those too with my Cayman! It's funny you bring that up because I was actually going to ask about that. In my case, those small drops on the garage floor were one of the first signs something was up. Just to add to my earlier response, when I had the cable issue fixed, my mechanic actually found that the leaks were coming from a hairline crack in one of the coolant lines near the pump connection. That's something they spotted during the repair that wasn't initially obvious. The whole thing ended up costing me a bit more than I mentioned before, closer to 300 Euro with the additional line replacement, but it was totally worth it to fix everything properly. Since you're seeing similar symptoms and the mileage is in the same ballpark (mine was around 150,000 km when this happened), I'd bet you're dealing with something very similar. The whirring noise you described is exactly what I heard too, it's pretty characteristic of this issue on these cars. Quick tip from my experience: while you're waiting to get it fixed, keep a close eye on that coolant level and maybe keep some extra coolant in the trunk. That saved me from getting stranded once before I got it properly fixed!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's super helpful, especially about the hairline crack discovery. I've actually got some coolant in my trunk already, great minds think alike! I'll definitely get it checked out this week, and I'll make sure to ask them to inspect the coolant lines carefully while they're at it. 300 Euro sounds way better than what I was imagining, I was bracing myself for a much bigger hit to the wallet! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's given me a much better idea of what to expect and what to look out for. I'll probably book it in with my local Porsche specialist tomorrow morning. Thanks again!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2006 Porsche Cayman . Those symptoms sound very familiar, I went through this headache last summer. Turned out the cable connecting to the water pump/control unit was shot. My mechanic at Stuttgart Specialists caught it during inspection. Total repair came to about 225 Euro, mainly labor costs and the new cable. They had it fixed within a day, and it's been running perfectly since. Before I can give more specific advice, could you tell me: Any unusual noises from the engine bay? Does it overheat while idling or during regular driving? Have you checked the coolant level recently? I might be able to share more relevant details with that info. These water pump issues can be tricky on Porsches, but they're usually pretty straightforward to fix once properly diagnosed.
