Possible crankshaft and camshaft fault in BMW 3 Series petrol engine 2007: experience and workshop recommendations wanted

Unsteady engine

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Engine shuts off by itself

Greetings, I have a question. I have a 2007 BMW 3 Series petrol engine with 123457 km on the clock and I'm really worried at the moment. The engine light is on, the engine just stops, it also loses power, and sometimes it won't even start. I suspect that the problem is related to the position of the crankshaft to camshaft. I really need help from someone who has experienced something similar or is familiar with it. My last experience with the garage was unfortunately not so great. Does anyone have experience with such problems and know a capable workshop? Thanks in advance.

Hi mate, I know what you mean, I had exactly the same problem with my 2004 BMW 3 series. For me it was a serious problem with the timing chain drive. The engine was also making strange noises and losing power, similar to yours. I strongly recommend you take the car to the garage and have the timing chain checked before more serious damage occurs. It was quite a repair on my car, but the good news is that it has been running like a new car ever since. So it's not a way out, just maintenance and repair.good luck, hope it helps!

Hey, thanks for your advice! You could be right about the timing chain drive. Do you have any idea what you paid for the repair back then? Has anything else come up since then that I should be aware of? Thanks and regards, Lukas.

Hey Lukas, sure, I can give you a few details. Since I had my BMW at the mechanic, the problem with the incorrect position of the crankshaft to camshaft has been fixed. It now runs like clockwork again. I paid 250 euros for the repair of the defective crankshaft sensor. To be honest, he fixed it pretty quickly and well. Since the repair was carried out, no further problems have occurred. So, my advice to you is to take your time and have your car checked thoroughly. I can only advise you not to wait too long to avoid major damage. All the best and I hope your BMW is back in shape quickly! Greetings back, my friend.

Great, thanks for the detailed answer! It's good to know that you feel better with the car after the repair. 250 euros also sounds reasonable. So I will definitely call the garage tomorrow and make an appointment to have it checked. Hopefully it's nothing more serious. Wish me luck! Thanks again and see you later, Lukas.

Hello, In this case, the first step is to check the sensors so that you can rule them out. In the next step, the timing must be checked to see if it is still OK or if it is misaligned. If the timing times are adjusted, this usually indicates an elongated timing chain. In this case, the timing chain must be replaced, which can be considerably more expensive.
