Possible faults with the camshaft phasing unit: symptoms and experiences with a 2015 Mercedes GLS Diesel

Jerking on acceleration

Metal shavings in oil

Loss of engine power

Weird engine noise

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Valve adjustment noise

Unsteady engine

Hey guys, I have a question. My 2015 Mercedes GLS Diesel with 120799 km on the odometer is driving me crazy. To summarize briefly: the check engine light is on, there is a loss of power, the engine runs rough and it jerks when accelerating. Fuel consumption is quite high and I can hear noises when adjusting the valves. There is also a strange engine noise. I suspect this could be due to a fault with the camshaft adjustment. Have any of you had similar experiences? What are your experiences with the workshop? I've had pretty bad experiences so far. It would be great if you had a few tips for me! Thanks a lot!

Hey, I can understand your situation. I once had a similar problem with my 2012 Mercedes GLK Diesel. The symptoms were almost identical: check engine light, loss of power and that damn jerking when accelerating. It turned out that the camshaft phaser was defective, just as you suspected. My mechanic identified the fault by reading the fault memory. After a detailed check, it was then confirmed that the camshaft phasing unit was faulty and was replaced. Yes, it's a serious thing, but don't lose hope brother. This is something that can be fixed. My GLK is now running like clockwork again without any indicator light flashing, jerking or buzzing. I hope this helps you and good luck to you and your car.

Dude, your story really sounds like what I'm going through right now! It's really good to hear that you've successfully got it under control. That's really encouraging! Do you remember what you had to put on the table to get it fixed? And has anything else come up since then, or is your GLK still running smoothly? I would be delighted to hear your answer!

Moin, I'm glad to hear that my answer has encouraged you! Yes, the repair actually cost quite a bit. I had to fork out around €1260 to replace the defective camshaft phaser. Quite a lot of money, but it was worth it to me. Since then, my car has been running like clockwork and the faulty camshaft phaser is history. The jerking, the check engine light and the loss of power have also disappeared since then. So, cheer up dude, once you've got that over with, your car will be fit again. Good luck!

Mate, thanks for your advice! To be honest, I'm a bit relieved to hear that your car is running smoothly again after the repair. 1260 € is quite a chunk, but if everything is fine afterwards, then it's worth it to me. So, long story short: I will now take my car to the garage and hope that I will soon be as happy as you are! Thanks again for your support. Have a nice day!
