Possible leaks in the tank ventilation system of an '06 Toyota LandCruiser: Experience and advice wanted

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Stalling while idling

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Hey guys, I have a little problem with my '06 Toyota LandCruiser (gasoline engine, 237842km run). I'm experiencing some symptoms such as the check engine light coming on, loss of power, unstable engine, jerking on acceleration, engine stuttering and shaking at idle. I suspect it might have something to do with a leak in the tank ventilation system. Have any of you experienced similar problems and are your experiences with the garage better than my last one? Would appreciate any advice!

Hey, I can sympathize with your pain. In my '03 Toyota Hilux, I also suspected that I had a defective activated carbon filter. The symptoms were similar to yours: engine stuttering, loss of power and that stupid check engine light was also on. It turned out that it really was the carbon filter that was the cause. It's job is to collect and store tank vapors and then burn them off. When that thing breaks, it causes a leak in the tank venting system, which then leads to the symptoms you mentioned. The whole thing was quite a hassle, but it wasn't an earth-shattering problem. It involved taking the filter, replacing it with a new one and making sure all the connections were screwed together properly. At the end of the day, it's solvable, however inconvenient. Hope my pile of misery helps you a bit!

Hey, thanks man, that's really helpful! I'm going to guess that too and it seems like I really need to work towards getting it checked. Do you happen to remember how expensive the repair was for you? And has anything else come up since the repair?

Hey, I'm glad I could help! Yes, the repair for the activated charcoal filter wasn't exactly cheap. I spent a good €275 on it. But since then the leak in the tank ventilation system has been fixed and I have to say I'm pretty happy with the work. No further problems have arisen since then. Experience is sometimes an expensive lesson. But my toy is now running like a kitten again. So, don't worry, you can do it too!

It's really great that you answered in such detail, thank you! 275 actually sounds reasonable if the problem is completely fixed. I'm much more reassured now and will certainly make the appointment at the workshop soon. Cool that you haven't had any further problems. Thanks for the support! Much appreciated!
