Presage automatic transmission problem

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my 2001 Nissan Presage with a gasoline engine. The automatic transmission seems to be acting up. Specifically, it won't start in Park, the check engine light is on, and the gearbox shifts roughly. I've scanned for codes, and there's an error stored related to the transmission. Could this be a neutral safety switch issue, or is it something more serious?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Nissan Presage is experiencing automatic transmission issues, including failure to start in Park, a check engine light, and rough shifting. The problem may be linked to a faulty transmission control unit, as indicated by a stored error code. Checking the transmission fluid showed no issues, suggesting the control unit might be the cause. It is recommended to have a qualified workshop perform a proper diagnosis to confirm the issue and proceed with necessary repairs.

It does sound like a transmission control issue. Considering the symptoms you've described – no start in Park, check engine light, and shifting problems – plus the stored error code, a defective control unit is plausible. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition?

Thanks for the quick reply! I did check the fluid level, and it seems okay, not burnt or low. But could a faulty control unit really cause all these symptoms? And is there a way to test it before replacing?

Yes, a faulty control unit can certainly cause all those symptoms. It governs shifting and interlocks with the starting system. Testing it can be complex and often requires specialized diagnostic equipment. Given the age of the vehicle and the confluence of issues, I'd suggest having a qualified workshop diagnose it properly to confirm the diagnosis.

Understood. I appreciate the advice. I'll take it to a workshop and get a proper diagnosis. They quoted around 1000€ for repair, looks like the control unit is indeed defective.
