Presage diesel engine stalling at idle
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Nissan Presage with a diesel engine is experiencing stalling at idle and reduced power, with the check engine light intermittently illuminating. Diagnostics indicate a faulty rail pressure sensor signal, with a specific trouble code P0191 pointing to a 'Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance' issue. The problem is likely due to a defective rail pressure sensor, and replacing it resolved the issue, restoring smooth engine operation and turning off the check engine light.

I visually inspected the wiring harness and connector; they appear to be in decent condition, although I haven't performed a continuity test. The DTC I'm pulling is P0191, indicating a 'Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance' issue. Is there anything specific I should be looking for when testing the sensor or its circuit?

P0191 confirms the rail pressure sensor issue. Given the age and mileage, the sensor is likely the culprit. While further electrical testing is possible, the symptoms and code strongly suggest sensor failure. I advise consulting a qualified mechanic for proper diagnosis and replacement. Continuing to drive with this issue could potentially damage the fuel injection system.

I proceeded with replacing the rail pressure sensor at a workshop. The total repair cost was 240€. The engine now runs smoothly, and the check engine light is off. Your input was greatly appreciated!

PRESAGE

A faulty rail pressure sensor on a diesel Presage of that vintage is not uncommon. Have you checked the wiring harness and connector to the sensor for any signs of damage or corrosion? Also, what diagnostic trouble code (DTC) are you retrieving from the ECU?
