Presage Exhaust Smell Rough Running
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Nissan Presage is experiencing rough running, a strong exhaust smell, and an illuminated check engine light. The initial suspicion is a faulty lambda sensor. Suggestions include checking the catalytic converter and oxygen sensors, as these components can cause similar issues. Ultimately, the problem is confirmed to be the lambda sensor, which is replaced to resolve the issue.

Interesting about the Volvo. I haven't dug that deep yet, mostly focused on the O2 sensors near the exhaust manifold. I'll check the catalytic converter and NOx sensors (if I even have them). Did your Volvo show any specific error codes, or was it more of a general 'exhaust malfunction' type thing?

The Volvo threw a P0420 code, indicating catalytic converter inefficiency. Given your symptoms and the age of your Presage, a failing catalytic converter or a defective oxygen sensor are highly probable culprits. I'd advise getting it checked by a workshop. It is a complex situation.

I took it to a trusted workshop. Turns out, it was indeed the lambda sensor, and it cost me 375€ to replace. Appreciate the help!

I had a similar issue with my 2012 Volvo V70. The symptoms you describe are quite close to what I experienced. Have you checked for any codes related to NOx sensors or DEF fluid issues? Even if you don't have a diesel, a faulty catalytic converter can trigger similar problems.
