Presage warning light and power loss
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Nissan Presage with a diesel engine is experiencing a warning light, reduced engine power, smoke during acceleration, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms suggest potential issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) or exhaust back pressure. A possible cause could be a malfunctioning exhaust back pressure sensor. It is recommended to take the vehicle to a workshop for proper diagnosis and repair to avoid further damage.

I'm not sure about the regeneration. How can I check the codes? I don't have an OBD reader.

Yeah, without reading the codes, it's hard to be sure. Given the symptoms, low pressure could be the culprit, especially the exhaust back pressure sensor. Honestly, I'd bite the bullet and take it to a workshop; they'll diagnose it properly. My sensor was borked and it cost around 245€ with labor. Cheaper than messing about and potentially knackering something else.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I'll take it to a shop and have them check the exhaust back pressure sensor. Hopefully, that's the issue. I appreciate the advice!

Sounds like DPF issues, alright. I had similar problems with my Presage. Is it trying to do a DPF regeneration and failing? What codes are you pulling?
