Previa check engine light and fuel consumption

I've got a 2002 Toyota Previa with a gasoline engine and I'm running into a weird problem. The check engine light keeps popping up, and I’ve noticed my fuel consumption is way up. I took it to a local mechanic and they said something about the inlet VANOS mechanics being faulty. Has anyone experienced something similar? Car has about 136560 km on it.

I had a similar issue with my Previa a while back. Same symptoms – check engine light and terrible gas mileage. It sounds like it could be a problem with the variable valve timing system. What codes are showing up?

Thanks for the quick reply! Unfortunately, I don't have the exact codes with me right now, but the mechanic mentioned something about a defect in one of the camshaft solenoid valves, or a power supply issue with it. Does that align with what you experienced?

Yes, that sounds very familiar. My issue was traced back to a faulty VANOS solenoid. Given the symptoms and what your mechanic is saying, it's highly likely. Replacing it should solve the problem, but I would suggest having a workshop check the oil pressure as well. Could be related to oil sludge. Hope that helps.

I had the VANOS solenoid replaced as you suggested, and it fixed the problem! Fuel consumption is back to normal, and the check engine light is gone. Total repair cost was around 250€. Really appreciate your help!
