Primera Speed Signal Fault

I'm at my wit's end with my 2002 Nissan Primera diesel. It's only got 37372 km on the clock, but I've got a speed signal fault that's causing havoc. The ABS lamp is constantly lit, I'm experiencing traction problems, and it feels like the whole ABS system is just plain failing. I've checked the dashboard connections, looked at the transmission input, even tried cleaning the speedometer sensor, but nothing seems to fix it. Anyone else run into something like this?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Nissan Primera diesel is experiencing a speed signal fault, causing the ABS lamp to stay lit and traction problems, indicating a potential failure in the ABS system. Despite checking dashboard connections, transmission input, and cleaning the speedometer sensor, the issue persists. A similar problem in a BMW was resolved by identifying a defective control unit, suggesting that a professional diagnostic might be necessary to confirm if the control unit is the cause, potentially leading to costly repairs.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds incredibly frustrating. I had a similar experience with my old BMW 3 series. ABS light constantly on, traction control going haywire. It ended up being a defective control unit messing with the speed signal. Have you considered that as a possibility?

A defective control unit, huh? That's interesting. What exactly was happening with your BMW? And how did you pinpoint that as the cause? I'm trying to avoid just throwing parts at the problem.

Basically, the unit was sending incorrect speed signals to the ABS and traction control systems. It caused all sorts of weirdness, very similar to what you're describing. The diagnostics pointed to a fault within the unit itself. Honestly, without the proper diagnostic tools, it's tough to confirm. In my case, it was pretty clear once the shop hooked it up. I think you should do the same, or you risk wasting time and money. If it is the control unit, the repairs will be costly.

Okay, that's really helpful to know. Sounds like my best bet is to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop for a proper diagnosis. The control unit seems the most likely culprit, especially after hearing about your BMW experience. Thanks a lot for the advice! I suspected as much. That will probably cost me around 1000€, but better to do it right than keep guessing!
