Prius Engine Fault Warning

Hey, I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2004 Toyota Prius hybrid. It's got about 71k kilometers on it. Yesterday, the car just wouldn't start. The engine light is on, and I'm getting a general "Engine Fault" warning. I tried a few basic things, like checking the fuel and fuses, but no luck. Could this be an ECU issue, or maybe something with the fuel injection? I am really lost, what do you think?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Toyota Prius with 71,000 kilometers experienced an "Engine Fault" warning and wouldn't start. Initial checks on fuel and fuses didn't resolve the issue, leading to speculation about potential ECU or fuel injection problems. A suggestion to inspect the battery cable connections revealed a loose connection, which, once cleaned and tightened, resolved the starting issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar problem with my Prius – though mine's a newer model. The engine light came on, and it wouldn't start. Have you checked the cable connections to the battery? A loose or corroded connection can cause all sorts of weird electrical issues that trigger the engine control malfunction.

Interesting, thanks for the advice! Where exactly should I look for these cable connections? Are they easy to get to, or do I need to remove other parts first? Also, what should I be looking for, corrosion or loose connections?

The cable connections are located directly on the battery terminals. Check for any signs of corrosion, which will appear as a white or bluish deposit. Also, ensure the connections are tight; you should not be able to move them by hand. If the problem persists, I would suggest a visit to a qualified workshop. It could point to an ECU failure.

Just wanted to let you know. You were spot on! It was indeed a loose connection on the battery cable. Cleaned it up, tightened everything, and now it starts like a charm. Cost me 155€ at the repair shop. Thanks a lot for your help!
