Prius Gear Shift Failure

I'm at my wit's end with my 2011 Toyota Prius hybrid. The gear shift indicator is dead, like a lightbulb that's given up. Now, I can't engage any gears. It's acting like it's possessed! The transmission is slipping, shifts feel unclean, and there's this awful grinding noise when I try to shift. The error memory is throwing codes, and the gear selection display in the speedometer is blank. My mechanic suspects a defective control unit. Is it worth getting this fixed? Repair costs are looking like 1000€

Sounds familiar! I have a Prius too, though I don't remember the build year. I had similar symptoms. I also couldn't shift properly, and it felt like the car was arguing with itself about what gear to be in. Are you sure it's the control unit? Does the instrument panel also show incorrect data?

The instrument panel seems to be working fine, except for the gear selection display. The mechanic ran diagnostics and that's what pointed him towards the control unit. I'm not sure if I should trust this diagnosis, because it's like blaming the messenger for a bad message. Did you have other issues alongside the shifting problems?

Yep, pretty much the same deal! The instrument panel seemed mostly okay, but the shifting was a nightmare. Honestly, I'd suggest taking it to a reputable workshop specializing in Toyota hybrids. They will know exactly what to look for. It's probably the same issue like mine.

It's reassuring to know I'm not alone in this electronic wilderness. I'll get it towed to a specialist and see what they say. It seems like the most sensible option now. Hopefully, they can exorcise this ghost in the machine without breaking the bank.
