Problem with Peugeot 406 Diesel: Black smoke, jerking when accelerating and increased fuel consumption

Hey guys, I have a strange problem with my Peugeot 406 Diesel (built in 2003). When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust, the engine light also comes on, it takes longer to start and also has a loss of power. It jerks when accelerating and fuel consumption has also increased. In addition, the exhaust smells quite strong and leads me to suspect that there is something wrong with the mixture control (perhaps the mixture is too lean?). Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on and has perhaps observed similar symptoms on their car? I would be delighted if you could share your workshop experience of this problem. How did you get it repaired? What were the causes and what repairs were necessary? Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 405 Diesel (built in 2001). I'm not a car mechanic or anything, but I would say I have minimal experience. Somehow I thought that the problem might have something to do with the lambda sensor. After some research and advice, I went to the local garage. They discovered that the lambda sensor really was faulty. The repair cost me around 375 euros. Is it possible that this is also the problem in your case? Maybe it would be helpful to have more details about your car, e.g. mileage, service history, etc. Hope that helps!

Hey, thanks for the advice! That's right, the lambda sensor really could be a possible cause. My Peugeot now has 112521 kilometers on the clock and the last service was about a year ago. I hadn't noticed any problems with the lambda sensor yet, but it's definitely worth a try to have it checked. I'll probably go to the garage soon and get it checked out. Thanks again!

Hi, no problem! You're welcome. Your Peugeot already has a few kilometers under its belt, so it could well be that the lambda sensor has given up the ghost. As I said, that was the case for me and everything ran smoothly again after it was replaced. Maybe you can find a garage that will offer you a fair price for the replacement. But don't worry, the TÜV says: "It's not a defect unless it's a defect." As long as you don't have any serious problems when driving, it's not so bad. Give us an update on what came out in the end. All the best and drive safely!

Hey, thanks for the encouraging words! That definitely takes away some of my worries. I'll go there soon and have it checked. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and the repair remains affordable. I'll let you know as soon as I know more details. Thank you very much for your help, really great! Take care of yourself and have a safe journey!
