Problems with 2008 BMW 5 Series: suspected VANOS defect - experience and solutions wanted
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
The 2008 BMW 5 Series is experiencing issues such as a constantly lit indicator light, rough running, excessive fuel consumption, and strange noises, which are suspected to be due to a VANOS defect. A similar problem was resolved in a 2006 BMW 3 Series by repairing a faulty VANOS solenoid valve. It is suggested to use an OBD2 scanner to read the error codes before taking the car to a garage, which could provide a clearer understanding of the problem.

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I'll ask my garage about the solenoid valves. I'd say 400 euros is still reasonable. I'm curious to see if this is the same cause as yours...

Hey, then it's quite possible that the problem could be similar to the one I had with my 3 Series back then. Your car has already done a fair amount of mileage. With high mileage, such defects can occur in the VANOS solenoid valves. The price my garage quoted was also perfectly okay.

Hey, yeah, I know the car has been through a lot, but I just don't want to give up on it yet. Sounds like your garage was very correct with the price, hopefully I'll be as happy. See you then and thanks again for the tips!

Before you take your car to the garage, it would be helpful to read the error codes using an OBD2 scanner. This will give you a better idea of what might be causing the problem. If you don't have one, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Once you have the error codes, you can share them here for more specific advice.

Hi folks I have the following error 002A80 Inlet Vanos control. What does this mean? I had replaced the solenoid valves with new ones and then the car ran much worse than before Now I have cleaned the old solenoid valves and they move freely. Now this error comes up. What does this mean?

The error code 002A80 indicates an issue with the VANOS intake control. This could be due to a variety of reasons such as a faulty solenoid, a clogged oil passage, or a worn timing chain. Since you've already replaced and cleaned the solenoid valves, I would suggest checking the oil passages for any blockages. If the issue persists, it might be worth having a professional mechanic inspect the timing chain. Please keep us updated on your progress.

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2006 BMW 3 Series. I have little experience with cars myself, but what you describe sounds pretty damn familiar. In my case, it was due to a fault in one of the VANOS solenoid valves. I had it repaired at my garage and all in all I was pretty happy with the work they did. They managed to fix the problem for 400 euros. LG
