Problems with black smoke and loss of power in 2018 Mercedes Vito diesel: suspected overloaded diesel particulate filter
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Mercedes Vito diesel is experiencing black smoke, loss of power, and a strong exhaust smell, with suspected issues related to an overloaded diesel particulate filter (DPF). The problem may be exacerbated by frequent city driving, which can prevent proper DPF regeneration, leading to clogging. Suggested solutions include attempting a DPF regeneration at a garage or potentially replacing the filter if regeneration is unsuccessful.

Hey, thanks for your feedback! I've already scrubbed my Vito pretty well, the speedometer shows 99932 kilometers. I had the last service not too long ago and nothing negative was noticed on the DPF. But I do a lot of city driving, so maybe that has something to do with it. I think I'll take it to the garage and have the filter checked. Thanks again for the tip about the replacement, then I know what to expect.

Exactly, this could really be due to your heavy city traffic. In city traffic, the engine often remains cold and the regular DPF regeneration cannot take place. As a result, the filter becomes clogged and diesel remains unburned, leading to strong exhaust odors and black smoke when accelerating. Your symptoms strongly suggest that your DPF is heavily loaded. Hopefully the garage can carry out a successful regeneration so that you can perhaps save a bit of money. But to be on the safe side, be prepared for a replacement if the filter is too full. 15 euros was my price, could be similar for your Vito. Keep your fingers crossed that it won't be that expensive!

Hey, thanks for the detailed explanation and the good wishes! You're right, it looks like the diesel particulate filter is the problem. I will take it to the garage and hope that regeneration is possible. However, if replacement is unavoidable, I will have to be prepared for the cost. It's annoying, but I want to continue driving safely. Your experience and tips were very helpful!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2016 Mercedes Sprinter. I'm not an expert, but I do have a bit of experience with cars. Back then, I initially tried to force a regeneration of the DPF when driving on the highway at higher speeds, but that didn't work. I then took the car to a garage, where the diesel particulate filter was declared defective due to high mileage and had to be replaced. That cost me around 1550 euros. I don't know how many kilometers your Vito has already covered and how often the filter has been regenerated so far, could you be more specific? With this information, I might be able to give you more advice.
