Problems with black smoke, power loss and DPF regeneration in Ford Crown Victoria gasoline engine, 2012

Strong exhaust smell

DPF regeneration failure

Loud hissing on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hi guys, I currently have a strange problem with my 2012 Ford Crown Victoria petrol engine. I have noticed that black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light comes on, the engine power decreases, there is a loud hissing noise when accelerating and the exhaust smells strongly. Apparently the DPF regeneration is not working properly either. I suspect that the exhaust gas recirculation could be faulty. Has anyone had similar problems and can give me tips on how this was rectified? What experiences have you had in the workshop? I would appreciate any advice. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my 2010 Ford Taurus. Although I am not really an expert, I would still like to share my experience. The reason for the problem on my car was damaged cables on the electric changeover valve. It cost me 155 euros at my garage to fix it. The garage did a good job and fixed the problem quickly. Could you give a little more information about your car? Mileage, recent maintenance etc.? That might help to better outline the problem. Hopefully that will help a little.

Hello and thank you for your answer! My Ford Crown Victoria already has 121726 km on the clock. The last service was two months ago. I will also take your advice into account and have the cables on the electric changeover valve checked. Maybe that's where the problem is. Thank you very much for your advice!

Hello again, no problem, always happy to help! With the mileage of your Ford, the cables could actually be a problem. Various factors such as ageing and corrosion can lead to this. I don't want to scare you, but my Ford had the problem with the ominous black smoke and the exhaust smell at a similar mileage. In my case, a partially burnt-out cable was the cause. Loud hissing under acceleration could also indicate a problem with the turbocharger, i.e. it could be that it is not sufficiently sealed or the hose is defective. I recommend that you have this checked at a specialist workshop. Perhaps they can also test the function of the exhaust gas recirculation. I hope you get it sorted out soon. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Hello, thanks again for your answers! Interesting that such problems have also occurred in your Ford with similar mileage. I will definitely consider the cable issue and have it checked by the garage. The possibility of a faulty turbocharger is also new to me. It sounds like I should have a thorough check done. I'll take your advice to heart and make an appointment with the garage tomorrow. Let's see what the results will be. I will definitely keep you posted! Many thanks for your help and advice!
