Problems with BMW 3 Series Diesel (2007): Loss of power, rough mileage and hissing noises

Loss of engine power

Loud hissing on acceleration

Jerking on acceleration

Shaking while idling

Whistling noise

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Hello car enthusiasts, I have a problem with my 2007 BMW 3 Series diesel - it just doesn't run as it should. It makes loud hissing noises when accelerating, the engine light comes on, it has less power and runs rough. In addition, it jerks when accelerating, dies from time to time when idling and also shakes and whistles. I think the fault could be with the position sensor of the boost pressure control, but I'm not entirely sure. Do you have any experience with this and can help? What solutions has your garage found? Many thanks in advance for your support!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2005 BMW 1 Series diesel. I'm not a mechanic either, but I can tell you what happened in my garage. The mechanic told me that my boost pressure regulator was electrically defective. The repair cost me 1520 euros. It seems like it could also be the boost pressure regulator in your car. What is the exact model of your car? That helps to think more carefully and share more info.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! My model is a 2007 BMW 3 series with 156817 km. I also have a hunch that it could be the boost pressure regulator, but that's really expensive fun... I'll ask my garage and hope that there might be another solution after all. Many thanks for your help!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2008 320d BMW. In my case, the position sensor of the boost pressure control was actually faulty. The symptoms were almost identical to yours. It was this constantly audible hissing noise when accelerating, coupled with the jerking and sometimes even the sudden engine stuttering. At my garage, they hooked up the diagnostic tool and then told me that this sensor was showing as faulty. They replaced it for me and I haven't had any problems since, at least not with these symptoms. I mean, it cost me somewhere around 400 euros - quite a lot of money of course, but still cheaper than a new boost pressure actuator. I would really recommend having your sensor checked. It's probably the real culprit in your car. Good luck with that, hopefully the damage isn't too bad and you'll soon be back on the road with full power!

Hello and thanks for the information! It's good to know that it could also be the position encoder. 400 euros is still not cheap, but definitely better than over 1500 euros! I'll take my 3 to the garage tomorrow and hope for the best. I'll let you know what they find. Thanks again for taking the time to reply to me. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing worse!

Hey Speedster The hissing could be charge air escaping. Have a look in the engine compartment to see if all the hoses are in order. Greetings
