Summary of the thread
A BMW 5 Series (2012) is experiencing issues with the check engine light, rough running, jerking during acceleration, stalling at idle, and black smoke from the exhaust. Hi, thanks for the tip! My BMW now has 236814 km on the clock and to be honest, I can't remember the last time the air filter was changed. It's probably been a while. I'll take your advice and have it checked at a garage next. Also hope the solution is that simple!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! With the mileage on your car and if it's been a while since the last filter change, then that sounds like a very likely reason for your problems. I would definitely recommend having the car checked at a garage. Even if that's not the cause, it's never a bad thing to have a clean air filter! In my experience, things like this are annoying but often easy to solve if you know the cause. Let us know what comes out, and if the garage finds anything else! I'll keep my fingers crossed that there's a simple and inexpensive solution. Feel free to ask more questions if you're unsure. All the best!

Hi again, thanks for your help, I really appreciate it! I'll take your advice to heart and make an appointment at my garage tomorrow to have the air filter checked. I'll keep you posted on what comes out of it. Hopefully it really is just the air filter and nothing serious. If I have any further questions, I'll be happy to get back to you. Thanks again and see you soon!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my BMW 4 series (2010 model year) some time ago. I would consider myself someone with some experience in car mechanics, but this was something I needed outside help with. I went to my regular garage and they told me that the engine air filter was clogged. Apparently this is a common cause for this type of problem. After they replaced the filter for 90 euros, my car was running fine again. Can you give more details about your vehicle? How many kilometers has it run and when was the air filter last changed? Maybe then I can help you more. Hopefully you have the same simple solution as me!
