Problems with BMW 5 Series petrol engine 2003: engine performance, uneven running and possible tank ventilation system faults

Hello everyone, I have a strange problem with my 2003 BMW 5 Series petrol engine. The engine lacks power, runs unevenly, twitches when accelerating, dies at idle and also shudders. The check engine light is on. I think it could be the fuel tank ventilation system. Has anyone gone through something similar and can give me some tips? How did you get this fixed at your garage and what was your experience? I am grateful for any help.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my BMW 3 series, 2005 model. I'm no car guru, but I have a bit of experience with cars and problems like this. At my garage they found that the hoses were clogged and it cost about 175 euros. But I would recommend you check your spark plugs and fuel filter as well, because sometimes the seemingly complicated problems can have quite simple causes. Hope that helps you. Could you perhaps give us more details about your car? That would certainly help us to be able to help you better.

Thanks for the tip! Spark plugs and fuel filter sound good and I will definitely check those. No one mentioned them at the last inspection and it's been a while. My old BMW has 277634 km on it so far and still runs so well. So I shouldn't necessarily overlook every little thing like you say. The hoses could also be a problem - I'll have a look at those too. Has anyone else here had experiences like this?

Hey, glad I could help! With so many kilometers, there could definitely be some wear. And the hoses could actually be clogged - that's not that unusual. So yeah, check it out and give us an update. Maybe someone else here can add something. By the way, don't forget the air filter! It can also cause similar symptoms if it is clogged. Keep at it and don't give up, we'll get it sorted!

I didn't know that the air filter could also cause such problems. As I don't want to leave any stone unturned, I will certainly take a closer look. Really, many thanks for your advice and help. I feel better equipped to tackle the problem now. I'll be sure to give you an update when I've solved the problem. Until then, thanks again for the support! It feels good to be part of this community. Stay healthy guys!
