Problems with BMW X5 Diesel (2010): Slipping gearbox, ABS warning light and noises - transfer case emergency running control

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Whining or grinding noises

ABS warning light

Hey guys, I have a problem with my BMW X5 Diesel, built in 2010. I have noticed that the gearbox is slipping unusually and the ABS warning light is illuminated. There are also whistling or grinding noises. I suspect that the transfer case emergency running control could be active. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how best to fix it? I would be really interested to know what experiences you have had with this in the workshop. Thanks in advance!

Hi, this sounds pretty similar to what I experienced with my 2012 BMW X3 diesel. I'd say I have rather little experience at car level, but I have approached my problem and here's what happened: I took my car to the garage and they found that the cable connection was faulty or oxidized. After the repair, which cost me 300 euros, the problem was solved and I haven't had any problems since. To go into more detail, perhaps you should give me some more information about your vehicle? For example, have any parts been added or changed? You could also give me the exact model of your BMW X5. Then I might be able to help you even better.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I haven't added anything new or different to my vehicle. It is completely original from BMW. The model name is X5 xDrive35d. Had the last service at 178410 km. Hope this helps. Maybe you have some more tips for me?

Hello again! Thanks for the additional information. It was similar with my X3, also completely original from BMW and without any subsequent modifications or additions. My advice would really be to take your car to a trustworthy garage. It could also be a problem with the transfer case itself, not just the cables. The garage can check the transfer case and determine whether it needs to be replaced or just repaired. It's annoying and can be expensive, but you certainly want your car to run reliably and avoid any major damage. Hope this helps you! Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for the great advice! I will then take the car to the garage as well and have the transfer case checked. Yes, it could be expensive, but it would definitely be better to spend some money now to avoid bigger problems in the future. I will keep you guys posted. Thanks again for the help. See you then!
