Problems with Citroen C1 petrol engine 2009: Black smoke, loss of power and high fuel consumption

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Engine shuts off by itself

Strong exhaust smell

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Hi guys, I have a small problem with my Citroen C1 gasoline engine, year 2009. The car does not feel normal. It shows many different symptoms like black smoke when accelerating, running out of power, loss of power, rough engine, jerking when accelerating, high fuel consumption, strong smelling exhaust, and stuttering when idling. The check engine light is also on. Somehow I think it might be the fuel level sensor that's acting up. Does anyone have any experience with similar problems and can give me tips on how this was fixed at the garage? Any tips or advice will be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I actually had a similar problem with my 2007 Citroen C3, so I have some experience, but I'm not a car mechanic or anything. In the end, it turned out to be the wiring harness/connector that was faulty, causing these various symptoms. I had it fixed at my local garage and it cost me 95 euros. To be able to help you better, we would need more information about your car. How many kilometers has it run? When was the last time you had your C1 checked? Did the problem start suddenly or did it develop over time? Any additional information could be helpful. Hope this helps you! Best regards

Hello, thank you for your reply. My C1 already has 177144 kilometers on the clock and the last inspection was done recently. I have had this problem for a few weeks and it seems to be getting worse. Never had problems like this before. Hope someone can help me further. Thanks again! Best regards

Hello again! Nice to hear from you again. That's a lot of kilometers and it's good that you have regular inspections. A lot of different problems can occur at such high mileages. Nevertheless, I would continue in the same direction and still suspect the source of the fault to be the wiring harness. The symptoms sound very similar. But it could also be a problem with the fuel system, perhaps a nozzle is clogged or the fuel filter is dirty. In any case, it should be checked by a professional. I would advise you to have your car thoroughly checked again at another garage to get a precise overview of the condition of the engine. It will cost a little, but it may save you a more expensive repair in the future. Good luck and please keep us up to date! Best regards

Hi, I really appreciate your advice. It sounds sensible to have the car thoroughly checked again, especially at this mileage. I noticed that the problem wasn't fixed even after the last inspection. Maybe a second opinion at another garage will be really beneficial. Thanks for your help. I will definitely keep you posted as soon as anything new comes up. Best regards!
