Problems with engine and EGR valve in a 2004 Opel Vectra - advice wanted

Unsteady engine

Check engine light on

Shaking while idling

Loss of engine power

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey guys, I need your help. My 2004 Opel Vectra gasoline engine has been acting up recently. The check engine light is on, the engine stops suddenly, the power drops, the engine runs so rough and it smells a lot like exhaust fumes. It also vibrates a lot when idling. I suspect that the problem could be with the EGR valve. Has anyone here had similar problems and how did you solve them? What did your garage do to get the matter under control? I would really appreciate your tips and experiences!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2002 Opel Astra. My experience with cars is rather limited, so I was at the garage as soon as the first warning light came on. My garage actually identified the EGR valve as the problem - it was faulty and stuck. They then replaced it. This repair cost me about 355.0 euros, so be prepared for a sum like that. To give you more details, it would be helpful if you could tell me more about the condition of your car. How is the driving behavior otherwise? Error messages in the on-board computer? Does the mileage depend on the weather or time of day?

Hey, thanks for the info, really helpful. My Vectra already has 97547 km on the clock. The handling has always been great and there are no error messages. It was recently serviced. The problem doesn't seem to depend on the weather or the time of day. The EGR valve sounds like a good idea though, I think I'll have it checked at the garage. Thanks again!

Hey, no problem, that's what a forum like this is for. With a mileage of just under 100,000 km, a few parts can wear out or break, that's quite normal. My Astra had the problem with the EGR valve at around 112,000 km. The EGR valve is just one of those parts that can simply break over time. I would definitely advise you to have it checked at the garage. The sooner you have it done, the better. There may be other reasons for your problems, but the EGR valve is definitely a good place to start. Especially if your car has already been serviced and nothing was found, it could well be that the valve is the culprit. Let me know what comes out of it. Feel free to contact me again if you have more questions. Have a good trip!
