Problems with engine performance and increased fuel consumption in Opel Captiva 2010: Possible defect in the knock sensor

Poor fuel economy

Weird engine noise

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Hi folks, I have noticed some anomalies with my 2010 Opel Captiva with a gasoline engine. The engine light stays on, the engine power drops, there is jerking when accelerating, the fuel consumption is poor and the engine sounds funny. I am now speculating on a defective knock sensor. Has anyone had experience with such symptoms and had the problem themselves or had it fixed by a garage? How did the garage proceed and what were your experiences? Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Hi, I drive a 2008 Opel Antara and had a similar problem. I don't have that much car experience, I definitely wouldn't call myself a strong hobby mechanic. I took my car to the garage because I noticed the jerking when accelerating and the increased fuel consumption. They then did the fault diagnosis and it turned out that the cable/connector was faulty. They replaced it for me and it cost me 95.0 euros. What exactly is faulty on your vehicle? Maybe I could give you more specific details if I knew more about the condition of your car. Hope that helps you a little.

Hello, thanks for your help! My car has already done 128536 km, the last service was only recently. Your tip with the cable/connector check sounds good. I also suspect the knock sensor, but I don't want to rush things and want to check all the possibilities first. It's just annoying when you don't know exactly what the problem is. Thanks for the advice, I think I'll go to the garage and have the fault diagnosed. Has your car been running better since the replacement? Has your fuel consumption improved?

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help! After replacing the cable/plug in my Antara, it has definitely become easier to drive again. The juddering has disappeared and fuel consumption has also improved. Sure, it's no longer a new car, but I'm satisfied. I can really only recommend a fault diagnosis in the workshop, you will certainly get more certainty there. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's worth it. Especially because you already have so many different symptoms, there really can be many causes. By the way, experience has shown that replacing a knock sensor, if this is indeed the cause, costs between 100 and 150 euros, depending on which workshop you visit. So it may well be that the price is still within reasonable limits. Keep your fingers crossed that everything goes quickly and smoothly!

Hi, thanks again for your great tips and the price reduction for the knock sensor replacement! You're right, that sounds like something I can put up with as long as my car runs normally again afterwards. After your experience report, I'm now really curious to see what the garage will find out and whether my fuel consumption will hopefully drop. Nice to hear that your Antara has improved. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed, I hope everything goes smoothly. I wish you a good journey with your Antara!
