Problems with Ford Ranger 2013: Black smoke, engine indicator light and exhaust odor - Possible diesel particulate filter failure
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Ford Ranger is experiencing issues such as black smoke during acceleration, a check engine light, loss of power, and a strong exhaust odor, suggesting a possible diesel particulate filter (DPF) failure. The symptoms align with a faulty DPF, as seen in a similar case with a Ford F-150, where replacing the DPF resolved the issues. It is recommended to visit a workshop for a diagnostic test or DPF replacement to restore the vehicle's performance.

Sure, glad to hear any advice! My Ranger has 121831km on the clock now and last service was done a few months ago. The mechanic didn't mention any problems with the DPF, but recently it has started. The exhaust smoke is really black and smells bad and the noise the exhaust makes is really annoying. Unfortunately I don't know much about cars myself, so I'm grateful for any tips!

Hey, thanks for the additional info! So it's noisy, smoky and smells bad, that definitely sounds like a faulty DPF. I'm not a mechanic, but that sounds like the typical symptoms of a broken diesel particulate filter, just like it was with my F-150. After the DPF was replaced, all the problems were solved. Strangely enough, mechanics often don't necessarily mention this when the remaining mileage of the DPF is already low. I would advise you to go to the dealer or a workshop and have a test carried out or have the DPF replaced straight away. It may be a bit expensive, but in the end you won't have any more problems and your Ranger will run like new again. Hope this helps you. Good luck!

Great, thanks for your help and advice! Sounds like your F-150 ran really well again after the DPF replacement. I hope the same thing happens with my Ranger. Will take your advice and get it into the shop asap. It's a bit pricey but hopefully that will solve it. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it. All the best!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Ford F-150 (built in 2011, diesel). I would say I have something like an average experience with cars. The problem was exactly the same for me: DPF internally defective. I took the car to the garage and after a few days and 1550 euros the problem was fixed. They had to replace the DPF. Could you perhaps give me a bit more information about your vehicle? Maybe that could help to make a more accurate diagnosis.
