Problems with fuel pressure sensor on Audi A5

Shaking while idling

Strong exhaust smell

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Stalling while idling

Poor fuel economy

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my 2012 A5 Audi gasoline engine, with 102487 km mileage. Black smoke when accelerating, MQL is on, jerking when accelerating, poor fuel consumption, strong exhaust odor, and stuttering at idle are the symptoms I have noticed. After being unpleasantly surprised with the costs at the workshop last time, I am naturally worried. My guess is the fuel pressure sensor. Can any of you perhaps share your experiences, whether you have had similar problems and how it went at the garage? Many thanks in advance!

Hey, I actually had a similar problem with my 2015 Audi A8. I also had the black smoke, the jerking during acceleration and the loss of power. My garage diagnosed a defective fuel pressure sensor at the time. The sensor was sending incorrect information to the engine management system, causing the symptoms described. It's actually not too difficult to fix. It's just important that you don't ignore it and take your Audi to the workshop soon. Then your A5 should be back to normal in no time. Good luck with that, buddy!

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2010 BMW 320i. The cause was also a defective fuel pressure sensor, just like yours. I had the part replaced and haven't had any problems with it since.

Hey, I've been to the garage now because I need my car urgently soon. As far as the costs are concerned, the repair was okay. They simply replaced the sensor and now everything looks better again. It cost me around €220. Thanks again for your help anyway.

Hey guys, interesting exchange here. You often hear about the fuel pressure sensor causing problems, especially in connection with high mileage. In a perfect car world, it naturally measures the existing fuel pressure and passes this on to the engine control unit. However, such high mileages as in your Audi can sometimes affect the sensors due to years of wear and tear. Failure of the fuel pressure sensor can lead to inaccurate measurement of the fuel pressure, which causes your engine to stutter and explains the negative impact on fuel consumption. In any case, you shouldn't wait too long to do this!
