Problems with gear shifting and unusual noises in a BMW 3 Series, model year 2005, diesel

Hello everyone, I currently have a strange problem with my BMW 3 Series, built in 2005, diesel. It makes strange noises when changing gear, both grinding and howling or grinding. In addition, the gears jump unusually and seem very unsteady. I have the feeling that the cause could be a malfunction of the torque converter lock-up clutch, but I'm not sure. Have any of you ever had similar problems and could give me some tips or advice? How did your garage fix the problem and what was your experience? I would be grateful for any experience and tips. Many thanks and best regards!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2003 BMW 1 series. My experience with cars is rather limited, but I looked into it anyway. From my experience, I can say that sometimes such noises can actually be caused by low transmission oil level. This was also discovered at my garage and the oil level was checked and topped up. The repair cost me 365 euros, as the oil level was indeed too low. This affected what was happening in the gearbox and led to the symptoms you describe. But in order to help you more accurately, it would be helpful if you could give a few more details about your vehicle. Which model is it exactly and have you done anything or noticed anything beforehand? Hope this helps a bit, feel free to ask directly if you need more information. Best regards!

Hi, thanks for your time and help. Well, I drive a BMW 3 Series from 2005 with a mileage of 258711 km. Regarding your question, I recently had a service done and there were no abnormalities. Perhaps I really should have the transmission oil level checked. Was your repair permanently successful after topping up the oil or were there new problems later on? I'm a bit worried about causing more damage in the long run if I keep driving like this. Thanks in advance! Best regards!

Hello, I'm glad if I can help! My car has been running without incident since the gearbox oil change - so far I haven't had any recurring problems. I also found it really relieving that the garage checked the oil level. Before I had this done, I wasn't sure what to do either and had similar concerns as you. I think checking the gearbox oil level is definitely a good idea if you are hearing similar noises. That might clear up the problem already. And before you get too worried and perhaps spend a lot of money unnecessarily, try that first. However, bear in mind that there may be other possible causes for this type of problem with the gearbox and that it is always better to consult an expert. So, if topping up the gearbox oil doesn't solve the problem, you should definitely go to a professional garage and have it checked. I wish you every success and hope that you can solve the problem quickly! Best regards!

Hi, your feedback was really helpful, thanks for that! I will have the transmission oil level checked first and then decide how to proceed. If this doesn't solve the problem, I will definitely visit a professional workshop. It's good to hear that your car has been running smoothly since the oil change, that gives me hope. Thanks again and wish you all the best! Best regards!
