Hey, thanks for the super-fast reply! Yeah, so mine has 1339 km on the clock and the last service was about 6 months ago. I haven't made any changes to the engine or exhaust - so everything is still pretty standard. I certainly hope it's not the ECU as that sounds pretty expensive. But thanks for sharing your experience - at least I know I should be prepared!

No problem, that's what we're here for! So, 1339 km is quite a distance. Your problem could just as easily be down to wear and tear. What you're describing could also be a problem with the turbocharger (maybe even just a leak), which would explain the hissing, whistling and smoke. A faulty turbocharger may well cause your car to consume more fuel and jerk due to poor combustion. The strong exhaust smell is also a sign of this. Regardless of whether it is the charge air temperature sensor, the control unit or the turbocharger, I would advise you to make an appointment at the workshop soon. These are all things you shouldn't ignore. The longer you wait, the more expensive it could become. And don't worry, even if it really is the control unit in the end (which I hope it isn't), you can usually negotiate the costs or pay in installments. Keep your fingers crossed and let us know here if you get any news. All the best!

Hi, really thanks for the thorough analysis of my situation. I really appreciate it. You're absolutely right, I shouldn't keep ignoring it, it could only get more expensive. I will notify my close mechanic and ask him to look at it urgently, especially the turbocharger since you mentioned that. Once I know exactly what's going on, I'll definitely report back here. Thanks again for the support, it really helps to know exactly what the cause could be. Have a safe journey!

@Marian81
As hello,I have a GLA 200 cdi,2.2 engine,it has the particulate filter taken off it and for a while now it's been blowing a lot of smoke and a pungent odor,I put it on the tester and can't find a problem,can you help me with some advice or what would be the problem?
Hello Marian81, the symptoms you're describing could be due to the removal of the particulate filter. The particulate filter's job is to trap soot particles, reducing the amount of smoke and odor emitted from the exhaust. Without it, these particles are released directly into the atmosphere, which could explain the increased smoke and odor. However, it's also possible that there's an issue with the fuel injection system or the turbocharger. I would recommend getting a second opinion from another mechanic or workshop. They should be able to perform a more thorough inspection and possibly identify the issue. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
Hi, I once had a similar problem with my 2016 Mercedes A-Class diesel. My experience with cars is mediocre, so I know a bit, but I'm not a professional. The whistling and black smoke could well indicate a problem with the charge air temperature sensor, but in my case it was the evaluation electronics (engine control unit) that broke. This also led to increased consumption and jerking in my case. The repair in the workshop unfortunately cost 10 euros, but since then it has been running like clockwork again. Can you perhaps give a few more details about your car? How many kilometers does it have on it and have you recently changed anything on the engine or exhaust? The more information we have, the better we can help. Don't despair, we can do it!
