Problems with Opel Captiva 2008: Irregular shifting, grinding noise and warning light - suspected transmission oil temperature sensor

Hey guys! I'm having a bit of trouble with my Opel Captiva, petrol engine, built in 2008. The car is doing strange things - the gearbox is slipping and shifting erratically, there's a grinding noise when changing gear and a warning light is illuminated on the speedometer. I suspect it could be the transmission oil temperature sensor, but I have no idea. Has anyone had similar problems and can tell me how this was solved in the workshop? Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Summary of the thread

An Opel Captiva 2008 is experiencing irregular shifting, a grinding noise during gear changes, and a warning light on the speedometer. The suspected issue is the transmission oil temperature sensor, but it might also be a faulty transmission control unit, as suggested by another user with a similar problem. The recommended solution is to have the fault memory read by a garage and consider getting a second estimate to confirm the diagnosis and repair costs.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2009 Opel Antara, which is a different model but pretty similar. I'm not a mechanic, but I know a bit about it because I like to tinker with my car. I also had problems with shifting and my engine light was also on. My transmission control unit was faulty. They replaced it at the garage and it cost me 1000.0 euros. Could you add some information about your vehicle? That would help me to give you a bit more detail.

Hey, thanks for your reply! Well, I've had the car picked up by the garage and they've read the fault memory. They think it could well be the transmission control unit, like yours. It's just annoying if it really costs a thousand quid... Well, at least the car already has 164310 km on the clock and I had the last service in the spring. I guess that's the way it is when you drive an older car, you have to invest from time to time.

Hey, no problem! Yes, unfortunately repairs can quickly become expensive, especially on older models. Incidentally, my Antara had the same problem with similar mileage to yours. Unfortunately, a transmission control unit for our Opel is not cheap. It helped with my car, but since then I pay close attention to unusual behavior and have the fault memory read out regularly. This helps to identify problems at an early stage and prevent more serious damage. What you could do is get a second estimate from another garage to make sure the price is fair. Then you can decide if it's worth it or if it's time to think about a new car. Good luck with that!

Person1: Thanks for the great advice! It makes sense to get a second estimate. I will check it out. I'm sure it will be a euro or two, but if it helps, it's worth it. And who knows, maybe the search for a new car will start soon. Thanks again and always have a crease-free journey!
