Problems with Peugeot 108 Diesel: Black smoke, high fuel consumption and suspected defect in the lambda probe heater

Hi guys, my Peugeot 108 Diesel (built in 2020) has been acting up lately! When I accelerate, black smoke comes out of the exhaust. The check engine light is on, the power is weak and the engine runs rough. It jerks when I accelerate and the fuel consumption is also somehow higher. I suspect a defect in the lambda probe heater. Have you had similar symptoms and can perhaps give me a few tips on what the workshop should look out for or whether the problem could be solved in another way? I look forward to hearing your experiences. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A Peugeot 108 Diesel is experiencing issues such as black smoke from the exhaust, high fuel consumption, weak power, and rough engine performance. The suspected cause is a defect in the lambda probe heater, but other potential issues include a faulty engine control unit or a defective turbocharger. It is advised to have the vehicle checked at a garage, focusing on the turbocharger and combustion system, to identify and resolve the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my Peugeot 106 petrol engine, year of manufacture 2018. I'm not an expert, but I have some experience with cars. Had the same symptoms and it turned out that the engine control unit was broken. I had it replaced in an independent workshop and it cost me a whopping 1000 euros. I would recommend that you have it checked at a garage. Please give me a little more information about your car, maybe I can then help you more specifically. I hope this helps you a little!

Thanks for the quick reply! I have an appointment at the garage next week anyway. I was worried because my car already has 150,722 km on it. Of course, it would be great if it was just the engine control unit. But I also suspected a defective turbocharger, as the car is also losing power. Hopefully it won't be too expensive. In any case, I'm looking forward to hearing what the garage has to say. Thanks again!

Hey, no problem! You try to help where you can, right? Your suspicion about the turbocharger could well be justified. My Peugeot had a faulty one and the symptoms were very similar to what you describe. Unfortunately, it's not cheap fun, a new turbocharger can cost quite a bit. The best thing to do is to tell your garage to take a closer look at the turbocharger. There's obviously something wrong with the combustion if black smoke is coming out of the exhaust. Keep your fingers crossed that it won't be too expensive. Keep us up to date!

Many thanks for the advice! I will definitely take your tip on board and tell the garage about my suspicions regarding the turbocharger. Hopefully the repair costs won't be too high. I'll definitely keep you posted and report what the cause was. Thanks again for your help!
