Problems with Peugeot 408 diesel engine: indicator light, engine power and EGR valve

Check engine light on

Unsteady engine

Strong exhaust smell

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Shaking while idling

Hi everyone, I'm having a few problems with my Peugeot 408 diesel engine, built in 2013. Strange things like the indicator light always coming on, the engine just cutting out, loss of power, rough running, strong exhaust smell and shuddering at idle. I have a suspicion that the EGR valve is going crazy. Does anyone have any experience with this and can help me narrow it down? How did you get this solved in the workshop? Your experience would really help me! Thanks, guys!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2011 Peugeot 406, they sound very similar to what I went through. Some symptoms were exactly the same, namely the check engine light and loss of power. I have considerable car knowledge and two right hands, but this was beyond my abilities. I took the car to a local garage and the guys determined for sure that the EGR valve was faulty and stuck. I paid around 355 euros to get it fixed. That fixed the problem and the car is running fine again. It would be helpful if you could let me know exactly what model and trim level you have, then I could possibly give you some more tips. Good luck with it!

Hey, thanks for your quick reply! Your description really fits my problems. My model is the 408 with the 1.6 liter gasoline engine. I already have 129544 kilometers on it and the last service was recently. The garage seems to me to be the best way, and if the price is 355 euros, I think that's okay. It's good to know that your Peugeot 406 ran perfectly again afterwards. I hope mine will be the same. I'll go to the garage and have it checked. Thanks again for the tip!

Hey, no problem, I'm happy to help! Yes, the EGR was really the problem with my 406 and after the repair it felt like new again. Your 408 with the 1.6 gasoline engine could probably have the same problem. Similar symptoms are already noticeable. You have already clocked up quite a lot of mileage, which could also be a reason why the valve is now acting up. Have it checked at the garage. The 355 euros were definitely worth it for me, especially as everything else is running great. If you're lucky, you might even get a better price. Let me know how it goes. I wish you every success and hope you get it sorted quickly and easily. See you then and have a good trip!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help me, I think that's great! You really seem to know your stuff, which is incredibly reassuring when it comes to things like this. I'm now planning a workshop appointment and will follow your advice. Maybe that will solve the problem with my car too. In any case, your story gives me hope that a repair could fix everything and the car will run smoothly again afterwards. I will definitely let you know how it goes. Once again, thank you very much for your help!
