Problems with Peugeot 607: Black smoke, engine problems and high fuel consumption - looking for tips and experiences

Hey guys, I've recently started having problems with my 2006 Peugeot 607 petrol engine. Black smoke when accelerating, engine light, the engine just cuts out, reduced power, rough running, jerking when accelerating, high fuel consumption, intense exhaust smell, stalling when idling - the whole package. I suspect that the fuel level sensor is faulty. Have any of you ever had similar problems and can give me tips on how this was solved in the workshop? I want to know what to expect. Many thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The issue revolves around a 2006 Peugeot 607 petrol engine experiencing black smoke, engine light, engine cut-outs, reduced power, rough running, jerking when accelerating, high fuel consumption, intense exhaust smell, and stalling when idling. The owner suspects a faulty fuel level sensor. A fellow Peugeot owner suggests checking the wiring harness/plug, as a similar problem was resolved by replacing this part in their vehicle. Additionally, the lambda sensor is suggested as a potential cause, particularly given the high fuel consumption. The owner plans to have both parts checked at a garage.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey buddy, I drive a 2004 Peugeot 605 gasoline, so a very similar model. I'm not a professional, but I have some experience with cars. I had a similar problem and suspected that the fuel level sensor was spinning. My garage helped me. In my case it was a faulty wiring harness/plug. The problem was solved by replacing the defective plug. That cost me 95 euros. Could you give me more details about your vehicle? Maybe I can help you better that way.

Thanks for the answer, buddy. My Peugeot now has 81528 KM on the clock. I took it to the garage last time about 6 months ago. I will take your advice and get the wiring harness/plug checked. I just hope it's nothing major.

No problem, always welcome! Given the mileage, it could well be that you simply need to replace a few wearing parts. The wiring harness/plug is definitely a good place to start checking. But it could also be the lambda sensor, especially if your Peugeot has a high fuel consumption. It may cost a bit more, but it's still within reason. I hope it's nothing more serious. Keep us posted, buddy. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight, I will certainly come back for an update. Well then, off to the garage, I hope it's nothing serious. I'll take your tips on board and have both the wiring harness/plug and the lambda sensor checked. Thanks again and see you around!

Hi, I'm getting this kind of message even though I don't have any fuel sensor problems, and even less so with a 607.
