Problems with Renault Modus 2007: Black smoke and lack of engine power

Hi guys, I'm having problems with my Renault Modus (2007 model, gasoline engine). Black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on, there is no engine power, there is also an exhaust leak and it smells strongly of exhaust fumes. I think it could be a problem with the exhaust aftertreatment. Do any of you have experience with such symptoms and can give me troubleshooting tips? I am particularly interested in how you have had such problems solved in the workshop. Many thanks for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Renault Modus is experiencing black smoke from the exhaust, a lack of engine power, and a strong exhaust smell, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the exhaust aftertreatment system. A similar problem in another Renault model was resolved by replacing a faulty lambda sensor, which could be a possible cause here. It is advised to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage, such as to the catalytic converter, and to consult a workshop for a thorough diagnosis and repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Renault Scenic (built in 2005) and the same symptoms were present in my Clio (built in 2009). I only have a little experience with cars, but I checked with my garage and it was a fault with one of the lambda sensors. It cost me 375 euros. I hope that helps you a little. But to be able to say more precisely, I would need a bit more information about your car. What model is it exactly and which engine variant do you have?

Hi, thanks for the quick reply! So, my model is a 2007 Modus, with a gasoline engine. As far as I know, nothing unusual was found at the last service, at 62370 km. You mean it could be the lambda sensor, okay, I'll check that out. Did the repair take a long time for you? Thanks again for your help!

Hey, no problem, that's what it's there for. Well, it took about a day to replace the lambda sensor in my Renault Scenic. Of course, the question is always how fast your garage is and whether they have the spare part in stock. So you can expect 1-2 days. The important thing is to get the problem fixed as quickly as possible before the catalytic converter is permanently damaged. Hope this helps you and let us know what you find out. Have a safe journey!
