Problems with Skoda Kodiaq 2018: Engine indicator light, loss of power and unusual exhaust odor

Engine shuts off by itself

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Jerking on acceleration

Hello, I have a problem with my 2018 Skoda Kodiaq petrol engine. The check engine light comes on, the engine simply switches off, there is a loss of power, the engine runs unevenly and it jerks when accelerating. The exhaust also smells very strongly. I suspect that it could be combustion misfiring. Has anyone had similar experiences and can give me some troubleshooting tips? I would be interested to know how your garage solved the problem and what your experiences were. I would appreciate any advice. Many thanks in advance!

Hello, I once had a similar problem with my Skoda Yeti 2016, a different model but almost the same age. I'm not a master mechanic, but I do have some experience with cars. At my garage, they did a diagnosis and it turned out that the cable connection to the ignition coil was faulty. They then simply replaced the broken connection, which cost me 95 euros, and I haven't had any problems since. Can you perhaps provide some more information about your car? For example, mileage, last inspection, etc.? That might help me to answer you more precisely.

Hi, great, thanks for your reply. My Kodiaq has now done 35247 km and the last inspection was only recently. You could be right, I will definitely have the ignition coil checked. Maybe it really is just something as simple as that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the tip!

Hi again, I'm glad to hear that I was able to help you. With the mileage and a recent inspection, it could actually be something simple like the ignition coil or cable connection. It would be great if the replacement fixes all the problems! If it's not the ignition coil, I would then recommend checking the fuel pressure or checking the fuel filter. Sometimes this can cause problems like this. Please be sure to let us know how it turned out and what exactly the problem was! It would be great if other Skoda drivers could learn from this. Good luck with the repair and have a safe journey!

Hello everyone I have a 2018 Skoda Kodiaq Diesel, the problem I have is that suddenly one day the check engine light came on and I looked in the manual and I figured it was the problem of the particulate filter and tried to do what is recommended to go at high revs for a certain time, well the question that the next day when I started the car this had disappeared. I made a trip to Salamanca in summer and another trip to Madrid. And suddenly in Madrid the check engine light came on again. Spend the night in Madrid as we were passing through, direction Cadiz and at night I made a little bottle of those to clean the particulate filter (that the truth is not if they work). The next day when I turned on the car did not show any failure and did not give me failures throughout the vacation, when I was returning home (Bilbao) also at the height of Madrid the light came on again, we spent the night in Burgos and we were there a few days and the error did not disappear. The day I decided to return to Bilbao I went to the gas station to refuel, turned off the engine and refueled with diesel and when I started the error was off. I took the car to the mechanic thinking it was a particulate filter error and my surprise was that the filter is at 45% opacity which was not to throw that error. At this point I'm a little crazy and do not know what can happen to the car, has this happened to anyone else thank you very much. Raul

It sounds like your Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) might not be regenerating properly. This could be due to short trips or low quality fuel. Try using a higher quality diesel fuel and take your car for a longer drive at highway speeds to allow the DPF to regenerate. If the problem persists, it's best to have a mechanic inspect your vehicle to avoid potential damage to the engine or the DPF system.

Today I return to the mechanic to tell me what may be the possible fault in question, but the DPF told me that it was not at all bad that had a saturation of 40% and that ruled out that was the fault. With what the mechanic tells me today I will tell you what could be the problem. Thank you very much for answering. Best regards

You're welcome, Raul. If the DPF is not the issue, the problem could be related to a sensor or the EGR valve. These components can sometimes cause the check engine light to come on. Please keep us updated on what your mechanic finds. Safe driving!
