Problems with the automatic gearshift and warning light on the 2012 Citroen DS4

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hey guys, my Citroen DS4 (built in 2012, petrol engine) is giving me a bit of a worry. The gearshift is totally crazy and a warning light comes on in the speedometer. I suspect that the switch for the parking position of the automatic transmission might be broken. Have any of you experienced this before and can tell me how to narrow it down? How did the garage solve the problem and what were your experiences? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, I had a similar problem with my Citroën DS3, built in 2010. I'm not a car specialist, but I know a bit about cars, so I can help a bit. The people at my garage discovered that the transmission control unit was faulty. The repair then cost me 1000 euros. In my case, the switch for the parking position was not affected, so your problem could be something else. Could you please tell us a bit more about the condition of your car: How many kilometers does it have on it? How old is the battery? When was the oil last changed? This information could help shed more light on the issue. Don't forget, at the end of the day, only a diagnosis from a garage can provide 100% clarity. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Hey, thanks for the answer! My DS4 now has about 145618 KM on it. I had the last service done about a year ago, but the battery is a bit older. I really hope it's nothing serious and will probably have to visit the garage soon to get some clarity. Thanks again for your support!

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! Well, with the mileage and the older battery, it could be that some parts of your car are just showing some wear. On my DS3, the transmission control unit did eventually give up the ghost, but yours might just need fine tuning or replacement. I was also once told by someone that a crazy park position switch can be caused by low battery voltage. You might want to get your battery checked or even replaced if it's older. And of course, like I said, never forget the oil level and condition of the transmission fluid. Even if it's a shot in the dark, it could be part of the solution. You're absolutely right, the best idea is to go to a garage and get a professional in. Would be great if you keep us updated here - maybe your experience can help someone else in the future. Keep your fingers crossed that it's nothing serious! Cheers!

Hey, thanks very much for the detailed answer! The points you've raised all sound very plausible and I think the tip about the battery could actually be the sticking point. I would definitely have the battery checked. And it's probably also time to get an expert to check the gearbox oil. Everything you've said really helps me enormously and reassures me a little. I'll definitely keep you posted on the diagnosis and repair. Stay healthy and see you soon!
