Problems with the cold start and the battery in a 2009 BMW 3 Series

Greetings, I am having problems with my 2009 BMW diesel 3 series. It takes much longer to cold start than normal, sometimes it won't start at all and the battery seems weak when starting. I suspect it has something to do with the battery condition. Has anyone had similar problems before and how did you get them resolved at the garage? I would appreciate any advice and experiences!

Summary of the thread

A 2009 BMW 3 Series is experiencing cold start issues and a weak battery, leading to suspicions about the battery's condition. Similar problems in other BMW models were resolved by replacing a defective IBS sensor, which is a common fault in these vehicles. The suggested solution is to have the IBS sensor checked and possibly replaced at a garage, with repair costs typically ranging from 225 to 350 euros.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I had a similar problem with my 2007 BMW 5 series. My car has always been difficult to start and the battery seemed to be weak. After a few checks, my garage identified the IBS sensor as defective. I had to pay 225 euros for the repair. Can you please give me more information about your car, e.g. model, mileage, etc.? This could be really helpful to share more details and help you further. Hopefully my experience will help you a bit!

Hey, thanks for your answer! My car is a diesel, a 2009 BMW 3 series, has about 180,000 km on it now. I also thought about sensor, but I wasn't sure. Your experience sounds very similar to my problem, thanks for sharing! I think I'll go to the garage and have the IBS checked. 225 euros is still reasonable. Thanks again for your help!

Hey, I once had a similar incident with my Bimmer - same model series. The car wouldn't start at all and I had to keep bypassing it to be able to move it at all. In the end, I took the car to the garage and, just as you suspected, it was actually the IBS sensor. On my car, the microprocessor was messed up and had to be replaced. The garage took care of it and after a few days everything was running smoothly again. The installation of the sensor cost me around 350 euros. Apparently this is a fairly typical fault with these models. So I would definitely recommend having the battery and charge level checked at the garage. With a bit of luck, it's just the sensor and you'll be out a few hundred euros.

Hello, and thank you for your advice! Your story sounds very similar to my current problem. I am now planning to take my car to the garage and have the IBS sensor checked. I really hope that's what's causing the problem and that the repair won't be too expensive. I really appreciate all your help and advice and I will keep you posted as soon as I know more. Thanks again and keep your fingers crossed for me!
